Native Hedgerow Planting Initiative in Suffolk

During the winter of 2024/25, New Shoots took a significant step towards enhancing local biodiversity by planting 225 metres of native hedgerow.

This initiative, undertaken in partnership with the village of Blaxhall and the local Tree Warden, is aimed at improving wildlife habitats and enriching the natural landscape of the area.

Hedgerows play a vital role in supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna, providing shelter and food sources for birds, small mammals, and pollinators. By introducing a variety of native plant species, this newly planted hedgerow will help create a thriving ecosystem, contributing to the overall health of the local environment.

The planting took place along roadside verges around Blaxhall, an area where natural habitats have been historically fragmented due to agricultural and infrastructure development. By restoring these green corridors, the project supports wildlife movement and strengthens ecological resilience in the region.

To ensure the success of the hedgerow as it establishes itself, we have used a biodegradable membrane. This innovative approach helps retain essential moisture in the soil, reducing the need for additional watering while also suppressing weeds that would otherwise compete with the young plants for nutrients and space. Over time, as the hedgerow matures, the membrane will naturally break down, leaving behind a well-rooted, self-sustaining habitat.

Community collaboration has been key to making this project a success. The involvement of Blaxhall residents and the Tree Warden highlights the shared commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable land management. By working together, we are fostering a greener, healthier landscape for future generations.

At New Shoots, we recognise the importance of integrating conservation efforts alongside sustainable agriculture. As salad crop growers, we depend on a balanced ecosystem, and initiatives like this hedgerow planting reflect our commitment to responsible farming practices.

We are excited to see this hedgerow flourish in the years to come, providing a lasting benefit for both wildlife and the local community.
